Week 10 — “What We’ve Got”

Happy Sunday Pilates People!

You've heard me say it a million times and will continue to hear it for as long as you're here on this ride -

“Work with what you've got.”

It's how I've approached life since I can remember.

Growing up, I was never the most talented or the most popular or the prettiest and I was acutely aware of each of those facts. But, I was smart, had a huge heart and if I wanted something, nothing was going to stand in my way. I guess you could say I'm stubborn and determined to prove everyone wrong about me.

That's what I had.

In the world of dance, I wasn't tall, or skinny, or flexible and I didn't have pretty feet. But, I was willing to sweat, stay in studio rehearsing for hours on end and fearlessly throw my body around with little regard for its safety (yes, that did eventually bite me, but I don't regret how I approached things for a second). I guess the nice way to put that careless quality would be willpower and passion.

That's what I had.

When it comes to my body and the work I've continued to do, I don't have a naturally strong one. I'm riddled with arthritis, injuries and scoliosis. But managing those truths has forced me to get creative, to do research, learn more and keep moving. Through these literal pains, I've developed a deeper understanding of how a body can keep going anyway.

That's what I have.

And in the beginning of everything that's happened in the world, I found myself focused on the things I had not - a career that was deemed important enough (either by finance or function) to keep going, someone to spend my life (or at the very least quarantine) with, and a place to escape to that wasn't the apartment I've been actively avoiding for years. But, because of everything that's happened and the accumulation of everything else I've mentioned above, I now have this and all of you, a Cat (go ahead, bring on the crazy cat lady jokes. I've never been more ready) and such a deep understanding of just how important friendship and connection is.

That's what I have.
And I'm realizing, that I actually have a lot.

So, on a more tangible level that relates to you, we want you to approach every class thinking of what you have, rather than what you have not. Because regardless of the pain in your hip, or the lack of a certain prop, or the fatigue that's inexplicably always there, we swear, you still have something you can work with - an opportunity to listen, to get creative, to be gentle or to choose a different adventure - and we will ALWAYS be here to support you.

And yes, I mean we.

In the spirit of "work with what you've got," I've got some awesome friends and the truth is, when we were looking for a name, we decided on Pilates People for a reason. It was never meant to be just me. We always wanted it to be more than that.

And we're finally ready.

This Saturday (May 30th) look out for a BONUS full-body video class brought to you by the first addition to the Pilates People instructor family - Jenni Sussman (!!!!!). I am so very thrilled and honored to have her in my life and as such a big part of this. She has quietly been with you all from day one, teaching and guiding me as we go. I can't wait for you to finally meet her.

To learn more about Jenni, please click here and check out her future videos!

And if you don't already have a video membership with us, get yourself signed up BEFORE this Saturday so you can join in the fun!

We're moving forward as a team, building this dream together, one step at a time, with the people we love (fun fact: our website guys - her husband and my "Star Girl" story - thanks guys!) and WHAT WE'VE GOT.

Thank you for supporting and inspiring us every day!

All our love,
Pilates People

P.S. - that photo at that top - our friend Oliver Scott Photo took that! He's an artist with some amazing work for sale. Check him out here. Friends supporting friends...always.
